Children from nurseries and primary schools across Edinburgh and East Lothian have been digging into their compost bins and cleaning out their wormeries for samples of their precious compost to enter into the first Changeworks ‘What Rot!’ Composting Competition.
The judging of the compost will take place on Thursday 14 June 2007 at The Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh.
Eleven local schools and nurseries are bringing along their entry on the day, whilst a further nine entries have already arrived by post. All the entrants are competing to be the proud winners of the fantastic ‘What Rot!’ composting and worm composting trophies and £100 of gardening vouchers to use in their school grounds. One lucky school will also win £50 of gardening vouchers for the best compost recipe.
While the judges (Amanda Braid of WRAP – Waste & Resources Action Programme and Tony Garn of The Royal Botanical Gardens) are carefully deliberating over the entries, the children will meet the live inhabitants of the compost bin, will make wiggly worms, go on a bug hunt and plant a seed of hope. An environmental storyteller will entertain the children - and adults!
