Changeworks: Projects
TIP OF THE DAY

I have to admit I am a bit of a convert since starting work for Changeworks. I buy books from charity shops and recently persuaded my local shop to accept used carrier bags for re-use.

We’re Washing Our ‘Gis at 30 Degrees!

Images available

Monday 22 October is the start of Energy Saving Week and the Edinburgh Aikido Club has pledged to ‘save their 20%’ by washing their keikogis (training suits) at 30°C.

The Energy Team at Changeworks is encouraging community groups to take collective action and reduce their energy use to help prevent climate change. The Edinburgh-based charity is hoping that Edinburgh Aikido Club’s commitment will encourage other community groups to make similar pledges, such as:

• Organising cavity wall insulation for a whole street
• Installing a rooftop wind turbine on a community building
• Children taking the ‘walking bus’ to school

To thank the Club for taking action Changeworks has provided each member with an energy presentation, an energy saving lightbulb and a free energy check, which will result in a personalised report detailing recommended energy saving measures for their home.

Teacher Scott Reed said: “The Edinburgh Aikido Club is delighted to be working with Changeworks for Energy Saving Week. The dynamic nature of aikido can result in large amounts of sweaty keikogis that obviously need to be washed! By washing at a lower temperature we can reduce the Club’s Carbon footprint. We are keen to be more environmentally responsible and have pledged to do this for Energy Saving Week.”

Changeworks Energy Adviser Zoë Westwood added: “The Edinburgh Aikido Club is raring to go with this pledge. They are washing their ‘gis at 30 degrees, have installed their free energy saving lightbulbs, completed home energy checks and are now looking for new ways to lower the Club’s Carbon footprint.”

Changeworks’ Energy Team provides information about energy efficiency, grants and special offers, lowering fuel bills, insulation, heating and renewable technology. If your community group wants to save its 20%, you can speak to an energy adviser FREE on 0800 512 012.

Edinburgh Aikido Club practices at the Eric Liddle Centre and at Meadowbank Sports Stadium. To find out more, please contact Scott Reed at reed.sf@gmail.com
