Changeworks: Projects
TIP OF THE DAY

Use fleece to line your curtains, it helps to keep the room lovely and warm, and if you have some left over, it can be used to make liners for use with real nappies.

Get To The Bottom Of Real Nappies At The First East Lothian Nappuccino

As part of Real Nappy Week 2008 (April 21 - 27), The Real Nappy Project, based at Changeworks, is holding our first East Lothian ‘Nappuccino’ to encourage parents from East Lothian to find out more about real nappies - over a nice cup of coffee, of course!

Parents will have the opportunity to chat to staff and volunteers from the Project, who are all parents using real nappies on their babies. A range of nappies will be available to view.

The Project also offers Trial Packs and Lending Kits. Please bring proof of address on the day to order your Lending Kit or take home your Trial Pack. Both cost £10 or are FREE with proof of low income. Lending Kit hire requires a deposit cheque of £50.

The first East Lothian Nappuccino will take place at:

Steamy Dreamy
High Street
Dunbar
Wednesday 23 April 2008
Drop in any time between 10am and noon

Contact the Real Nappy Project team on: 0131 555 4010 or email:realnappies@changeworks.org.uk or text ‘nappy’ to 81025 for more information. (Texts charged at network operator’s standard rate.)

The benefits of real nappies:

1. By using reusable nappies parents could save over £500 – even more if the nappies are used on a second or third baby! (This saving will vary depending on the type of disposable and cloth nappy products being compared.

2. All nappies have some environmental impact, but by using reusable nappies no waste will go into landfill. Not using a tumble drier also helps to minimise further the impact on the environment.

3. Cloth nappies are more natural against the skin. Modern disposable nappies contain super absorbent granules that turn into a gel when they come into contact with urine.

4. Reusable nappies are very hygienic as they are used with a liner to catch faeces. It is sometimes difficult to remove faeces from a disposable nappy and so it is usually wrapped up with the nappy and sent to landfill. Liners can be flushed down the loo, which is the only system designed to deal specifically with human waste.

5. As they tend to fit snugly around the waist and legs, cloth nappies are generally very reliable - especially those with a separate cover.

6. Cloth nappies also provide good padding for the base of the spine, which is particularly beneficial when children are learning to walk.
