Real Cool, Baby!

National Real Nappy Week 2008 runs from 21 – 27 April, so what better time to try using real nappies on your baby?

The Edinburgh and Lothians Real Nappy Project, based at Changeworks, offers a £10 Trial Pack containing nappy samples or a £10 Lending Kit containing all parents need to try real nappies at home for two weeks.

What's more, those on a low income can claim these FREE! (One FREE Trial Pack or one FREE Lending Kit per household.) And if parents decide to use real nappies, the Project will also provide a FREE £30 voucher to spend with a local nappy retailer (proof of benefits required).

ALL applications received during Real Nappy Week 2008 will also receive a FREE TotsBots Rainbow fleece wrap.

The benefits of real nappies are clear:

Cool savings
Using real nappies can save around £500 - even more if used on a second or third child.

Cool the climate
The UK currently throws away around three billion disposable nappies every year, most of which end up in landfill, where they generate methane - a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

Cool and funky
Modern nappies come in an amazing array of colours, styles and fabrics - for the best dressed babies and washing lines!

Notes to Editors:

1. By using reusable nappies parents could save over £500 - even more if the nappies are used on a second or third baby!

2. All nappies have some environmental impact, but by using reusable nappies no waste will go into landfill. Not using a tumble drier also helps to minimise further the impact on the environment.

3. Cloth nappies are more natural against the skin. Modern disposable nappies contain super absorbent granules that turn into a gel when they come into contact with urine.

4. Reusable nappies are very hygienic as they are used with a liner to catch faeces. It is sometimes difficult to remove faeces from a disposable nappy and so it is usually wrapped up with the nappy and sent to landfill. Liners can be flushed down the loo, which is the only system designed to deal specifically with human waste.

5. As they tend to fit snugly around the waist and legs, cloth nappies are generally very reliable - especially those with a separate cover.

6. Cloth nappies also provide good padding for the base of the spine, which is particularly beneficial when children are learning to walk.

Real Nappy Week is organised by The Real Nappy Campaign, a not-for-profit company administered by Rezolve Kernow with initial membership from LARAC, Rezolve Kernow, the Nappy Alliance, WEN and WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme).

i. LARAC is the Local Authority Advisory Committee that represents local authority recycling officers within the UK

ii. ReZolve Kernow is a not for profit organisation encouraging sustainability, with a focus on waste and material resource use

iii. Women's Environmental Network is the only organisation in the UK working consistently for women and the environment

iv. WRAP works in partnership to encourage and enable businesses and consumers to be more efficient in their use of materials and recycle more things more often. This helps to minimise landfill, reduce carbon emissions and improve our environment

7. The Edinburgh and Lothians Real Nappy Project is an innovative project, delivered by Changeworks, that aims to encourage Edinburgh, West Lothian, East Lothian and Midlothian parents to use real nappies as an alternative to disposable nappies. The Project is funded by INCREASE, the City of Edinburgh Council, West Lothian Council, East Lothian Council and Midlothian Council.

8. Changeworks exists to improve quality of life and to protect the environment. CHANGEWORKS Resources for Life Ltd. is a company registered as a charity in Scotland and limited by guarantee. Charity No. SCO15144. Company No. SC103904. Registered Office: 36 Newhaven Road, Edinburgh EH6 5PY. VAT Reg. No. 703521966.
