TIP OF THE DAY

Run your car using biofuels - this can be cheaper and is better for the environment. Also, keep your tyres inflated to the correct levels as under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption.

FREE Home Composting Help is at Hand

Could you benefit from some neighbourly advice on where to site a new compost bin? Would you like to find out what else you could add to your compost bin and how to get more out of it? Yes! Then your local Master Composter volunteer could come to your aid and visit your garden or back green, to deliver expert FREE advice.

Charles Passmore from Morningside is one of the Master Composter volunteers. Pairing together his knowledge of composting with his drive to do something to help other people and the planet, Charles has been volunteering as a Master Composter with the Edinburgh based sustainability organisation Changeworks, since 2004.

Charles says: “Everyone is becoming more aware of the environment these days and can do their bit to help by home composting. Composting doesn't need to take a lot of time or space and you don't even need to have a garden, just a small bit of earth to put the bin on is enough. And your efforts will be rewarded with great compost for FREE!“

Charles is part of a network of volunteers active in their local areas, helping their neighbours to start composting and advising them when things in their compost bin don't seem to be going to plan. The service covers householders in Edinburgh and anyone booking a home visit from a Master Composter volunteer will receive a FREE kitchen caddy.

Scotland collected 1.4 million tonnes of biodegradable waste in 2006/07 and up to 60% of household waste can be classed as biodegradable. Home composting is an effective way of reducing the amount of this material, which is usually sent to landfill, resulting in decreased transport costs and decreased emissions of harmful greenhouse gases from landfill operations.
