Volunteer profile: Busayo Aliu

What influenced you to want to volunteer at Changeworks?

Changeworks’ vision and mission align with my career aspirations and goals. It also provides an amazing platform for me to make a difference in people’s lives and the environment.

What roles have you undertaken as a volunteer at Changeworks and how have you found the experience?

I have played the role of energy advisor at several community centres and actively participated in the recently concluded Energy Savings For All project. This was targeted towards ethnic minority groups living in Scotland by providing energy advice and support, such as energy-saving tips that can be adopted to reduce the cost of energy bills, and drastically minimise the adverse impact of fuel poverty, especially for residents living in inefficient homes. The experience is highly fulfilling and inspires me to do more.

What is it you find rewarding about volunteering at Changeworks?

The reward and joy derived from volunteering at Changeworks are unexplainable. It is the feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction, knowing fully well that my existence counts and that I am making a positive difference in a little way.

What has been your most memorable moment volunteering at Changeworks?

My most memorable moment was having my African communities visit our event centres and respond to my calls during the Energy Savings For All project, to share their energy concerns freely because they felt more comfortable and better understood by me.

What advice would you give to somebody thinking about volunteering at Changeworks?

To anyone thinking of volunteering at Changeworks, you are in the right organisation to learn, grow, and make a meaningful contribution to people’s lives and support decarbonising Scotland’s homes.
