Maggie lives in an old farm cottage with oil heating and was finding it very cold. When her daughter mentioned that an Energy Efficiency Scotland: Area Based Scheme (EES: ABS) was running in the area, Maggie decided to sign up. The project was part of the Scottish Government’s ongoing drive to make homes easier and less expensive to heat.
Due to the type of property Maggie stayed in, it was recommended that she install internal wall insulation to help to make the house more comfortable and lower heating costs.
According to Maggie the whole process was fairly quick, and the installers were great. Both the joiners and plasterers were nice and friendly whilst also carrying out their work to a high standard.
After the work was finished and some time had passed, we asked Maggie to comment on what changes she had noticed within her home.
“Last winter, when the temperatures dropped below zero, my bedroom would only be about six degrees overnight. Over the last couple of weeks when most nights have been below zero, my bedroom has been warmer overnight. I feel that when I have the heating on, the house retains the heat better. Last year, it was pointless to even have the radiators upstairs turned on as it seemed to make no difference to the room temperature, but I am definitely feeling a change this year. It is definitely more comfortable in the house.”
Maggie also says that the work has improved the appearance of her home.
“I now have nice flat, smooth walls and with sharp lines on the dormers. Because they replaced the skirtings on the walls that were insulated, I didn’t have to sand a hundred years’ worth of paint off to get a nice finish on the paintwork.”
Asked if she’d encourage other people to consider internal wall insulation, Maggie said:
“I would absolutely recommend the insulation works.”
