What is the Warm Home Discount scheme?

The Warm Home Discount takes £150 off your winter electricity bill.

If you have a prepayment meter, the discount is available as £150 credit.

In Scotland, some people (known as the Core Group) get the discount automatically each year. Others (known as the Broader Group) need to apply for it when their supplier opens the scheme.

Am I eligible for the WHD Scheme?

The first thing to check is whether your energy supplier is signed up to the scheme. The gov.uk website keeps an up-to-date list of which energy suppliers offer the Warm Home Discount.

If your energy supplier offers the Warm Home Discount, there are two ways you can qualify to receive it. You either need to be part of the Core Group or the Broader Group. The criteria for groups are explained below.

Warm Home Discount Core Group

You are classed as being part of the Core Group if you receive the guaranteed element of Pension Credit. Pension Credit is a weekly benefit which tops up a low income. To find out whether you are eligible for Pension Credit or to make a claim, visit the gov.uk website.

Warm Home Discount Broader Group

Different suppliers have different rules about who can be included in the Broader Group for Warm Home Discount. As a general rule, you either need to be on a low income or in receipt of certain benefits.

Not all of the biggest energy suppliers publicise their criteria for the Broader Group. Where we’ve been able to find the criteria, we’ve linked to it below.

How do I get the Warm Home Discount?

If you are part of the Core Group and your energy supplier is signed up the scheme, then you should receive your Warm Home Discount automatically.

Your supplier should write to you between November and January to let you know you’re eligible. The discount itself should come off your bill by the end of March. If you think you qualify but haven’t heard from your supplier by January, then we’d advise calling the Warm Home Discount helpline on 0800 030 9322.

If you’re part of the Broader Group or think you might qualify, you will need to apply to your energy supplier’s Warm Home Discount Scheme when it opens.

The number of Warm Home Discounts your electricity supplier can offer is limited, so you should apply as soon as you can.
