Your new home will already have an energy supplier. You can find out who they are here. To get up and running, simply follow the steps below. If your new home has a pre-payment meter, then the steps are slightly different.
Do you have a pre-payment meter?
Moving to a home with a pre-payment meter/s
Pre-payment meters are also known as pay-as-you-go meters. You buy credit, then add it to the meter.
Electricity pre-payment meters
Electricity pre-payment meters are topped up with a key. Follow the advice below to set up your electricity pre-payment meter.
Gas pre-payment meter
Gas pre-payment meters are topped up with a card. Follow the advice below to set up your gas pre-payment meter.
Moving to a home with standard meter/s
With a standard meter you use energy first, then receive a bill.
Step 1: Read your meter/s

Step 2: Contact the new energy supplier
First, let the new supplier know that you’ve moved in. Our Ways to contact your energy supplier guide can help.
Step 3: Sign up with the new supplier
Second, you’ll need to set up an account with the new supplier. You can always switch to a different supplier later, if you want to.
To set up an account, you’ll need to tell the supplier:
- Your name
- Your address
- Your date of birth
- A meter reading/s
Step 4: Get the final bill for your old home
Check whether you need to pay your old supplier, or if they owe you money.

The steps to take depend on the kind of meter/s you have.
Do you have a pre-payment meter?
Moving out of a home with a prepayment meter/s
Step 1: Tell your energy supplier
Try to give your supplier at least 48 hours’ notice that you’re moving home.
Step 2: Pay any debt on the meters
If there is debt on the meters, then you should pay it if you can.
Step 3: Read your meter/s
On the day you move out, take a meter reading. Our Pre-payment meter guide can help you read your pre-payment meter/s. Keep this information safe when you move.
Moving out of a home with a standard meter/s
Step 1: Tell your energy supplier
Try to give your supplier at least 48 hours’ notice that you’re moving home. They’ll ask for your new address so they can send your final bill.
Step 2: Read your meters

Write down the date and meter readings. Keep this information safe.
Step 3: Get the final bill
The supplier will send your final bill to your new address. You might need to pay them, or they might owe you money.
