What does Home Energy Scotland do?
Changeworks delivers the Scottish Government’s Home Energy Scotland (HES) service in both the South East of Scotland and the Highlands and Islands.
Our HES teams provide free and impartial expert guidance on improving home energy efficiency. This includes everything from advice on installing and using renewable technology, to tailored tips on how to save energy in the home, to investigating what financial help householders might be eligible for.
What have our Home Energy Scotland teams achieved this year?
We’re incredibly proud to share our HES team’s achievements for the 2024-25 financial year. Between them, our HES Highlands & Islands and South East teams have achieved a 176,959 tonnes lifetime CO2e reduction.
They have also engaged with an incredible 37,249 unique householders and supported 2,989 households through the home renewables, energy storage and energy efficiency specialist advice service.
Every one of these customers has received tailored advice and support specific to their own home and situation.
Warmer Homes Scotland: Help for those who need it most
Our HES teams have also referred 3,457 households to Warmer Homes Scotland (WHS). WHS is the Scottish Government’s national fuel poverty scheme, providing eligible households with up to £10,000-worth of energy-saving home improvements.
Over the years, the teams have helped more and more people access the life-changing support that WHS offers. When the programme started in 2015/16, only 2% of HES South East customers and 4.8% of HES Highlands and Islands customers were referred for the programme. For the 2024/25 financial year, those figures are 10% and 8.5% respectively, meaning that around 1 in 10 customers were referred. Through the team’s hard work, an ever-growing number of people are getting the help they need to make their homes warmer and cheaper to run.
What’s next for our Home Energy Scotland teams?
Our HES colleagues report that 50% of the people they’ve spoken to are living in fuel poverty. Such a high figure reminds us all that there is still a lot of work to do if we want to make low carbon living an affordable reality for everyone in Scotland.
With that in mind, the teams will continue to build on their fantastic achievements from this year, driving Changeworks’ mission of decarbonisation and fuel poverty alleviation.
