Changeworks launches Tenant Energy Support service

In partnership with gas distribution network SGN, Changeworks has launched a new one-of-a-kind service for housing associations in Scotland to provide easy access to energy advice for their tenants.

The Tenant Energy Support service provides comprehensive energy information, advice, and advocacy to help tenants manage their energy.

Tenants can access a range of online energy advice guides and support from an advisor on the phone when their housing association becomes a member. This includes how to solve common energy issues, such as being overcharged by a supplier, as well as ways to use less energy at home.

There is also a small fund attached to the service for tenants in need to access emergency support. Furthermore, new tenants can join an optional text or email advice service to help them get set up in their home and familiar with their new heating systems.

Morven Masterton, Head of Community Engagement and Energy Advice Services from Changeworks said: “Over the past years the demand for energy advice has grown exponentially. Last year we developed an innovative pilot to make accessing energy advice and support much easier for thousands of people.

“We’re grateful for our partnership with SGN, which has helped us to develop on the successful pilot and expand the service to more housing associations across the country.”

The service builds on the pilot which worked with five housing associations across Scotland. The pilot service was able to save tenants an estimated £160,000 via reduced energy bills and access to grants or vouchers. This included advocating for tenants struggling with energy costs and those who had issues with their suppliers.

By the end of the ten month pilot, 75% of tenants who had received support said they felt they were more knowledgeable about their energy matters because of the service.

Linda Spence, Vulnerability Manager at SGN, said: “We’re really pleased to support Changeworks with this initiative, to help them expand their reach across Scotland helping tenants who are struggling with their energy costs ahead of winter and beyond.

“Providing specialist support will ensure tenants have a suite of resources to help them use energy safely, efficiently, and affordably. Our partnership with Changeworks has grown since 2021 and we are looking forward to sharing the impact and outcomes this specialist support will bring especially for those worried about using their energy.”

Changeworks is currently working with seven housing associations to provide energy advice through the service and is supported by the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations to make it available to its members.

Gillian Duddy, Membership and Funding Manager at SFHA said: “We know that the cost-of-living crisis continues to put a significant strain on social tenants, particularly when it comes to energy bills. We’re therefore pleased to continue our relationship with Changeworks and support the Tenant Energy Support service, something which will be essential as we approach the winter months.

“Our housing associations and co-operatives already go above and beyond for their tenants when it comes to advice services, and I’d encourage them to take advantage of this additional support.”
