How to read your meter

It’s important to send regular meter readings to your energy supplier. That way, you’ll receive accurate bills. You’ll also avoid problems such as being overcharged.

There are several different types of meter. Click on the type you have to find out how to take a reading.

Gas meter

Gas meters measure gas in cubic meters (m3) or cubic feet (ft3). So if you can see m3 or ft3 somewhere on the meter, then this is your gas meter.

Electricity meter

Electricity meters measure electricity in kilowatts per hour (kWh). So if you can see kWh somewhere on the meter, then this is your electricity meter.

Pre-payment meter

Pre-payment meters are also called pay-as-you-go meters. You use a special key (for electricity) or card (for gas) to put credit on the meter.

Smart meter

Smart meters often come with an In Home Display (IHD) like the one pictured below. The meter itself may say SMETS 1 or SMETS 2 on it.
